How We Endorse:

As Planned Parenthood, we are very careful and deliberate in our endorsement process. A candidate survey is mailed to every candidate who files for office in Kansas and Missouri asking for their position on a number of questions about access to birth control (including emergency contraception), comprehensive sex education and access to abortion. These are all issues that our elected officials are likely to face in Topeka and Jefferson City.

Not every candidate who returns a pro-choice survey will receive an endorsement. At PPAKM, we base our endorsements on several criteria:

PPAKM gives preference to pro-choice incumbents, even if their challenger is pro-choice; when an elected official has supported Planned Parenthood’s mission, clients, and services they have earned and deserve our support. PPAKM is non-partisan and may make endorsements in both the Democrat and Republican primaries; our best scenario is that all candidates in a race are pro-choice. In that win:win situation, PPAKM will turn its resources to races where our support can impact the choice outcome.

What if no candidate is listed for my district?

If there is no candidate endorsed in your district, that means PPAKM does not have confirmation of the candidates’ stance on reproductive health issues.  This does not necessarily mean that the candidates running are not pro-choice.  If you have further questions about a candidate’s stance on any issue, we encourage you to contact the campaigns.
